The mandatory conditions for zakat are as follows:
1. ISLAM
2. FREEDOM
3. FULL OWNERSHIP
- Ownership of the wealth must be clear and no other person has rights over it except the owner.
4. REACHES NISAB (Minimum Threshold)
- The wealth must reach or exceed the nisab, the minimum amount that determines whether zakat is obligatory.
5. REACHES HAUL (One Year Period)
- Haul means that one lunar year has passed over the wealth owned, based on the Hijri calendar (354 days), or based on the Gregorian calendar (365/366 days in a leap year).
6. GROWING WEALTH (AL-NAMA’)
- The wealth subject to zakat must be of a growing nature or have the potential to grow.
7. SOURCE OF WEALTH / INCOME MUST BE HALAL AND LEGAL
- The income or wealth must be obtained from halal sources and acquired in ways permissible under Islamic law and national law.
